The power of positive thinking on your fitness results

The power of positive thinking is spouted all the time, but it is interesting to see some of the science behind it.

Let's discuss two interesting studies we have come across that demonstrate the power of positive thinking and visualisations and the impact it can have on your results (and no doubt, your whole persona and mentality!).

In one study, motivational self talk resulted in improved endurance and cognitive function. In this particular study, this was tested in heat. We think this shows how even when there are environmental or other factors that may usually impact your performance - your brain is powerful and can help you overcome these barriers.

The second study we came across provides some amazing tangible and easy to understand results.

In this study, athletes that engaged in positive visualisations every day ended up lifting 10-15 pounds more at the end of the period. The group that did not use positive visualisations only lifted 5 pounds more at the end of the period. The visualisation activities included the athletes laying down for at least 5 minutes a day, and were encouraged to visualise themselves lifting 110% of their 1RM. They could also listen to motivational music.

How can you apply this to your training?

We understand how hard it can be (sadly) to think positively about yourself sometimes. We struggle with this too. A great start is to just shift from negative thinking to neutral thinking - so something like "I am getting stronger" "I am doing something today to better myself" etc.

Try it out in your next workout, and see how it feels!
